In the mountainous region near Magetan, Indonesia, a small medical clinic was built by students for a school and the surrounding community, providing them with space for immediate care in an area with few nearby medical facilities. The building provides a sterile and safe environment, while incorporating sustainable strategies.
Positioned high on a steep retaining wall, the clinic faces inward towards the surrounding plaza, engaging the space most often used by school children and for community events. A bench, finished in locally made lava stone tiles, spans the length of the building providing the plaza with a place to rest as well as a waiting area for the clinic. A more private waiting area and entrance displays a screen wall built from local, hand-made concrete blocks which casts a dynamic display of light and shadow into the space. A large shed roof extends several meters providing shade for the plaza, as well as passive cooling for the building in the hot tropical climate. Operable windows and doors throughout the clinic can be opened to provide cooling air flow or kept closed to provide a peaceful environment for patients, while also providing plenty of natural sunlight.
The clinic was built mainly with locally sourced material and finished with high quality finishes to provide a clean, comfortable, and durable space. Creative solutions were used for furniture, fixtures, and finishing details, using leftover, found, and locally made materials to minimize waste and display the beautiful craftsmanship of both the students and the community.
